So, what is stopping you?

If you are ready to begin your love affair with the sport, we have all the advice you need. In this article, we explain how you can join your local boxing gym and the equipment you should take with you on your first night at the gym.

Find the right gym- taking up boxing

It’s not about finding the best gym in the world. It’s about finding the best gym for you. When deciding to start boxing you will have a clear picture of your intentions. You’ll know if you want to build muscle, lose weight or even compete in bouts at an amateur level. When you have set out your plans you will be in a better place to choose the type of gym for you. One that is tailored for professionals or a gym that is more for boxercise and keep fitters.

After choosing a gym, you have two options. You can contact the gym by email or telephone – most will have websites with the address and contact information listed. Send your message or pick out the information you need from the website. If you would prefer to speak to the staff and trainers in person, you could always visit the gym. This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the location, meet the people behind the scenes, and even watch a boxing class from the sidelines. If you’re interested in pursuing boxing as a workout, you can take the next step and join boxing classes near you. This is an exciting way to stay fit and build strength while learning a new skill.

Packing your kit bag

The great thing about boxing training is it’s not expensive and you don’t need a lot of equipment. There are a few things you should have in your bag for night one and you can pick these up online for not a lot of money.

To get the best out of your training you don’t want to overdress or wear too many layers of clothes. A t-shirt, shorts and running shoes are ideal. Then you should have hand wraps or bandages and these will protect you against injuries to your wrists and knuckles while punching the bags.

Failure to wrap your hands properly could see you suffer a small cut that won’t heal in a hurry if you continue to train. You should buy your own gloves for hygiene reasons. The likes of skipping ropes, a gumshield and boxing boots are optional.
